Letter from the President – Summer 2025

Letter from the President – Summer 2025

Each new edition of Wilson Magazine offers us the opportunity to celebrate the remarkable progress of our College and her people—and this one is no exception. Across generations and geographies, Wilson students and alums are advancing knowledge, breaking boundaries, and shaping communities. Whether through groundbreaking research, innovative teaching, artistic expression, or public service, the Wilson spirit of curiosity, courage, and compassion endures.

Here on campus, Wilson College continues to move forward. This Spring, we welcomed our largest-ever enrollment of over 2,000 students—a milestone that affirms our commitment to academic rigor, individualized  attention, and an environment where all students are known, valued, and supported. We also sent forth into the world 275 graduates at Commencement—a culmination of years of transformation of our students into the leaders of tomorrow. From new degree programs and grant-funded initiatives to our ongoing strategic planning process, our vision for the future is bold, student-centered, and rooted in the liberal arts and sciences.

Yet we press forward in a time of headwinds. As many of you know, the higher education landscape is shifting dramatically. Economic pressures, demographic changes, and political scrutiny are converging in ways that challenge institutions like ours. While some question the value of college or seek a narrow definition of education’s purpose, we at Wilson remain steadfast. We believe in education that cultivates critical thinking, ethical leadership, and the ability to collaborate across difference. And we believe that every student—no matter their background—deserves the opportunity to thrive.

During this tumultuous time, Wilson must be able to serve her students not just symbolically, but substantively. That means preserving the ability to advocate effectively in the legislative arena, especially when the stakes for our students are so high. I am actively meeting with policymakers to champion the cause of higher education, and Wilson, in particular. I do this with a deep conviction that access to a transformative education is worth protecting—and worth fighting for.

In the days, weeks, and years to come, Wilson is counting on you. I have long said that we are amid higher education’s most difficult decade: a global pandemic, demographic declines, a decrease in the college going rate,  outsized inflation, and political headwinds that are stronger than ever before are creating challenges like we have never seen. Now more than ever, the College is counting on the Wilson family to help us advance.

As we move forward, let us remember: Wilson’s strength has always come from her people. From students who rise above obstacles, to faculty and staff who model lifelong learning, to alumnae, alumni, and friends who give generously of their time, talent, and resources—you are the reason we are thriving. And you are the reason we will continue to do so.

Together, we rise. Together, we press forward.

With gratitude and determination,

Wesley R. Fugate, Ph.D.
President, Wilson College
